Job description

The Director of UX is responsible for helping grow a world class UX team of 20+ people, capabilities, and knowledge base. This includes growing our understanding and transformative insights about customers and how they interact with mobile technology, articulating and teaching lean user experience methods and best practices, contributing to thought leadership and product/solution innovation, and mentoring and growing the team.

The User Experience Director leads our most complex and innovative projects, creating products used by millions of people every day. The person needs to have an intuitive feeling for the way products and services should work and a deep understanding of what users want and need when it comes to mobile services. The work includes mobile strategy and interaction design across any touch point— web, mobile, social, tablet and in-store. The User Experience Director monitors our projects from the very start. They oversee interdisciplinary teams through research, strategy development, concepting, product definition, and design. We need someone who can be strategic product owner, a team player, and a skilled client partner all rolled into one. They should be decisive and excited to lead their team forward—we need someone who will never tire of pushing the work to be better. In addition to project work, the User Experience Director help to shape the User Experience department, manage and mentor other interaction designers, and play a major role in business development.

Qualified candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 8 years of experience in interactive product development including requirements analysis, specification development, user design and implementation. A minimum of 2-3 years of experience managing direct reports is required, preferably in a matrix environment. Working closely with multiple Business, Development and Operational teams throughout the development lifecycle, the candidate must have proven expertise in user interface design, requirements analysis and documentation, leadership and bringing world-class products to market. Demonstrated ability to create and leverage requirements assets such as use cases, wireframes, prototypes and presentations is required.

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Experience working with mobile devices and technologies including iOS, Android, iPad
  • Experience with Human-Computer Interaction such as human factors, contextual inquiry, heuristic reviews, rapid prototyping and usability testing
  • Establishing a fully functional usability lab in collaboration with Product, IT, and other client-facing teams
  • Provide clear strategy and direction to transition legacy products/applications from an “Industrial” look and feel to a highly intuitive “Commercial” experience for end users.
  • Conceptualize and Influence design concepts to peers and senior executives to get a buy-in
  • Strong technology background would be preferred since the position would require the Director to work closely with the IT Engineers, Business Analysts and Solution Architects.
  • Anticipate user needs and develop design principles in conjunction with the UX team strategy roadmap
  • Collaborate with the marketing team and incorporate the Brand Management guiding principles into all aspects of user experience
  • Hands-on experience using industry leading prototyping/ideation tools such as Axure.
  • The ideal candidate will possess strong understanding of mobile technologies.
  • Knowledge across many functional areas, including product management, engineering, UI design, and marketing as well as a comprehensive knowledge of operational systems such as survey administration is required.
  • Candidate must possess strong organizational, project management and communication skills, including the ability to create and deliver quality presentations and compelling product demo experiences to senior management.
  • Lastly, candidate must be a team-oriented, collaborative individual with excellent communication, collaboration and interpersonal skills who will initiate action and achieve results.
